ABOUT
The focus of my practice is storytelling, through illustration, writing and book art. I like to explore and to create imagined worlds, finding ways to express and communicate the ideas, themes and narratives through different methods of making.
I am interested in the inherent narrative value of a book, the power of cumulative information in the turning page, and explore this in illustrated books, folded and experimental book-forms and writing novels.
For my illustrative work, I use ink, brush pens, pencils, watercolours and digital colouring to create one-off drawings, book illustrations and to develop projects. I like to explore the themes of the stories, finding the most effective visual language to communicate the story-world.
Artist's books allow experimentation with planes, folds and structures beyond the flat surface of the page. Image and text can be combined in new contexts and forms, inviting the reader to interact with the object and interpret the meanings of the book. I have explored folds such as the squash-fold, Turkish map folds and Heidi Kyle's Blizzard book, and sewn codex forms, stab bindings and zines. My books have been selected for exhibition, sold at BABE (Bristol Artist Book Event) and I have run workshops demonstrating bookmaking techniques and the endless applications and possibilities of the forms for artists and makers.
My interest in books also extends to writing them. I am currently working on three different novels, including my own spin on medieval fantasy, an experimental multi-genre adventure and a story about a supernatural motorbike club touring North America. I have also explored interactive digital writing, and post on my blog.
