Jabberwocky
Oct. 2022 - Dec. 2022
In the first trimester of my MA, for the self-directed project for the module Sequence and Series, I created an illustrated book of the 'Jabberwocky' poem. The nonsense poem was written by Lewis Carroll and is about the slaying of the monster, the Jabberwocky.
Outcome
Due to the awkward sizing and shape of the pages, with the foldouts, I had to glue the single-sided pages together and bind the book with a stab binding. I like the vivid colours and the control I had over the formatting and final binding. I also created digital mock-ups to visualise the book.
Process
Initially, I was unsure what to pursue for the self-directed project: illustrating the poem 'Jabberwocky' or creating a visual version of a short story I had written called 'Little Hope'. I played with both ideas for a while but ultimately settled on 'Jabberwocky' so as to continue using the bright neon colours I enjoyed in the set brief, the Decalogue series.
I began by designing the characters, testing colour schemes and trying different perspectives. A class on illustrating from different point of views introduced me to omniscient view, a sketch of which I developed for the character taking "the vorpal sword in hand". The use of shadows in this drawing inspired me to use shadows as a character throughout the illustrations.
